Points of Interest & Description

This ride takes you and your family along the High Country Rail Trail to the beautiful Kiewa River and back again. Shaded, with some gentle rises and a few quiet road crossings, the whole family can ride together at their own pace. Your ride starts as you roll through the start arch and pedal along the Lake Hume foreshore. As you follow the rail trail, use the highway underpass and make your way towards Mahers Road. Do not forget to check out the sculpture along the way.

Cross Mahers Road and continue to Bonegilla Station, where thousands of immigrant families and children arrived in the 1950s to start a new life in Australia. Take a quick breather here if you need it, then the ride keeps going, crossing Pollards Road and heading out across the lush Kiewa floodplain. Here you will see more remnants of the old railway, including trestle bridges, cuttings and embankments. Take the cycle bridge over the Kiewa River and roll into the shady picnic area for a well earned rest and refuel at the Rider Reviver, shown as a blue circle on the map.

After recharging and a chat, return along the rail trail, rattle over the raised decking and soak up the beautiful sights and sounds of the Kiewa floodplain, maybe seeing a few cows and alpacas on the way. As you ride towards the lake, get ready to ride through the finish arch together, and you are done. Park your bike, enjoy a free soft drink and sausage sandwich, and relax under the trees after a great day out.

Recommended bike: Most bikes and trikes. Mobility scooters, scooters and prams start at the rear. Non-racing tyres on road bikes, and inflatable tyres on scooters and prams, will help on the gravel areas near the Kiewa River.
