Ride Description
Grab your bike and join us for a great ride and a feast for the senses. Escape the daily hustle and bustle and cruise along the picturesque High Country Rail Trail between Ebden Reserve and “the town that moved”, Tallangatta. The rail trail provides comfortable riding, mostly bitumen with the remainder well formed track.
The ride starts at Ebden Reserve, the red star on the map above, and heads east along the foreshore of Lake Hume. Continuing along the rail trail, you will ride past Ludlows and Huon Reserves, both with toilets, onto a stretch of formed gravel trail and down across the rebuilt and splendid 600m long Sandy Creek bridge. Stop here for a breather and to take some photos of the panoramic views of Lake Hume and the surrounding countryside.
Jump back on the bike and work up an appetite with a little climbing through the more undulating landscape and steeper banks as you make your way towards Tallangatta.
As you roll into Tallangatta, follow the rail trail signs and take a left towards the main street to arrive at Triangle Park and the Rider Reviver. Take a break and refuel under the park’s beautiful trees, and take in this little town’s unique history: the whole town moved to make way for Lake Hume in the 1950s.
Well rested, get back on the bike and return to Ebden Reserve along the rail trail, seeing the beautiful high country landscape from a different direction.
Roll through the finish arch back at Ebden, park your bike and enjoy a free soft drink and sausage sandwich after a great day out.
Recommended bike: Most bikes. On a road bike, non-racing tyres will help riders who are not experienced on gravel.
